Field trials
To those truly committed to the excitement of a competitive sport there is the world of Field Trials.
There are two Championship titles which can be successfully earned within this sport.
The first is from the Open All-Age Stake, the title of Field Trial Champion is awarded and the initials FT Ch are added to the front of the dog's CKC registered name.
The second is awarded from the Amateur Class and the initials of AFT Ch are added the front of the dog's CKC registered name.
A dog with a FT Ch or AFT Ch title is an outstanding individual who has been awarded at least one first place and total of 10 points. For each trial run, only four dogs can earn points in one trial in each of the two classes mentioned above no matter the number of dogs entered. In this sport there are other levels which you will hear spoke of with respect including an All-Age Limited dog, a dog "who had an outstanding Junior career" or even a National winner. This sport is not a simple sport it has many levels and rules; here in this space I can not do it justice. To learn more on the subject, there are many good books devoted to the subject or you can look up Retriever Field Trial clubs. Today's field trial dog and handler are dedicated individuals who excel under difficult conditions, individuals with the heart to win (and loose), the heart to train day in and out regardless of the weather. Few people or dogs obtain these prestigious titles so those who do are treated with respect and honour.
